I watched the movie “Hidden Figures” at the Christmas. I have genuinely wanted to watch this movie since it was released, and I finally got to see it. There are three main characters, Katherine Johonson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.
Three women are employee of NASA, and they are friends. At the beginning of the movie, there is a scene that they drive to NASA with a car, which shows Dorothy is good at handling of machines. I also know how to handle some machines. After then, I can notice Katherine’s advantage is geometric analysis and Mary Jackson’s major is mathmatics and physics.
But their worklifes in NASA are very hard because they are black and woman. In the 1950s, there was discrimination on racism. So Katherine had to run 800m for colored bathroom on work. And one man, who is future husband of Katherine, used rude expressions about Katherine’s work. Then Katherine said the reason why NASA hired woman like them, “And It’s Not Because We Wear Skirts. It’s Because We Wear Glasses.” I am impressed this line, And I am also wearing Glasses to watch world in more details. LOL
Katherine is responsible to calculate orbit of rocket, which is the sub project to send human to the moon, in this point, mathmatics of parabola and ellipse is needed. But as the position(x, y, z) and entry angle of object is changes, it was difficult things in situations main variables changes in NASA meetings do not agree for woman. I am also familiar with Kepler’s laws and ellipses, and interested in Physics, so enjoyed.
Mary Jackson, who eventually became NASA’s first black female engineer, was asked: “Would You Try To Be An Engineer If You Were A White Man?” She answerd ” I Wouldn’t Have To. I’d Already Be One.” … Khhh….
And this is the best scene I chose, In court Marry Jackson said to judge, “I plan on being an engineer at NASA, but I can’t do that without taking them classes at that all-white high school, and I can’t change the color of my skin. So I have no choice, but to be the first, which I can’t do without you, sir. Your honor, out of all the cases you gon hear today, which one is gon matter hundred years from now? Which one is gon make you the first?”
I usually like the “First”, and I hope to be the “First Anything” in the space. LOL
When NASA first introduced IBM, nobody knew how to use it, Dorothy Vaughn self-taught the Fortran programming language and taught about 30 of his colleagues.
Below is a real person from Hidden Figures. I’m glad the hidden heroes are now revealed and I will never forget them.
If there is an opportunity, I want to provide equality in education and diverse experiences so that those who are being discriminated can take opportunities. Because the experiences I have can sometimes be helpful to someone. And seriously, I would like to change my name to Catherine Hong.
