An ‘oscilloscope’, previously called an ‘oscillograph’ and informally known as a scope or o-scopeCRO (for cathode-ray oscilloscope), or DSO (for the more modern digital storage oscilloscope), is a type of electronic test instrument that graphically displays varying signal voltages, usually as a two-dimensional plot of one or more signals as a function of time. Other signals (such as sound or vibration) can be converted to voltages and displayed.

Frequency measurement

The frequency can be measured in the oscilloscope as follows: The frequency spectrum of the signal on the screen is examined and a small calculation is made. The frequency is defined as the number of times the observed wave period occurs within one second. The maximum frequency of the range can be measured, but is always in the range of 100 MHz. To verify the response performance of the signal in the circuit, the scope measures the rise and fall times of the wave.

How to measure frequency

By increasing the vertical sensitivity, you can obtain clear images without cutting the amplitude. Now adjust the sweep rate by displaying two or more complete wave cycles on the screen. And, calculate the number of divisions of one full cycle in the graticule from start to finish. Then, multiply by taking the horizontal sweep speed, which represents the number of units calculated over a period of one week. It will give you a cycle of waves. The period is the number of seconds to elapse for each repeating waveform. With the help of the period, you can easily calculate the number of cycles per second (hertz).
